My 10%

Tonight, on the last night of February, I looked at my blog and realized that lately I have been full of asks....help support education in Uganda, help pay Andrielis' tuition, help Andi and Yoandi get tutored, etc. etc. etc. But what had I contibuted?

Back in 2010 I made a personal commitment to donate 10% of my income to charity.

tithing- a practice of giving a specific portion (traditionally 10%) of one's income for charitable or religious purposes (in my case, charitable and not religious).

Yet for the past few months, I have not done this. Donating 10% is something I am proud to do, and something I am happy to do. With it being the last day in February, I figured today was the perfect day to get back on track and I made my donations for the month of February.

The causes I supported this month?
World Vision (monthly fee for my sponsor child Tsehay)
Andrielis' Education Fund (towards her school tuition)
Sarah's Covenant Homes (21 kids need to get into private school this year)

As important as it is to advocate for the causes I am passionate about, it is just as important to put my money where my mouth is. I don't make much, but I can give up a few lunches out to make it possible.

PS In the photo is the very beautiful Rachel, who I spent a month with in May, during my time in India. I know it is wrong to have favourites amongst the kids, but Rachel was a secret favourite. She is looking so grown up and beautiful in her uniform, and how can I NOT donate when I know how bright her future is?!

Interested in taking part in the 10% donation challenge this month? CUS School in Uganda has a need for donations towards educational field trips. Check out THIS post to learn more.

I am so happy for Rachel and all these other kids.

The wonderful thing about a percentage goal is that it doesn't matter what you make! It's the parable of the widow's mite (sacrifice is relative). I believe EVERYONE in America can do 10% (or more), they usually just don't choose to. Choices are everything.
